Obviously there is a lot of confusion in Auburn, and its pretty clear that the media played a very strong role in manufacturing that confusion. However, keep in mind that while the city denies that they are considering an ordinance that would ban pit bulls (in this article), other articles indicate they may still be considering breed specific MSN, which is permitted in California. This is one to keep an eye on.

Auburn officials said today that talk of the city banning pit bulls was more bark than bite.
"Some how, some way it got out that our council was banning pit bulls," said John Ruffcorn, an Aurburn Police Department captain. "It was never the plan."
The City Council met last night to discuss the city's animal ordinance, but the result was the council asking the staff to offer an ordinance revision. The law does not allow breed-specific bans.
Ruffcorn said it's too early to say what direction the ordinance revision will take.
The issue garnered media attention in part because of last week's judicial order to kill four pit bulls that mauled a teen.
Judge Joseph O'Flaherty also banned owner Daniel Coverston from "owning, possessing, controlling or having custody of any dog for three years" in Placer County or Auburn.
The dogs remain in the county's control pending appeal.
