City Won't Ban Pit Bulls

AUBURN - The City of Auburn is not going to ban pit bulls, as some dog owners feared.
The City Council talked about changing Auburn's animal ordinance at Monday night's weekly meeting. Members took up the issue because of the recent downtown incident in which four pit bulls attacked a 17-year-old boy, severely injuring him.
Supporters of the breed packed the council chamber last night. But Mayor J.M Holmes put their worst fears to rest. "Item nine on tonight's agenda is not a discussion of banning dogs," the mayor told the assembly. "So if you're here to do that, forget about it."
The mayor pointed out that state law prohibits any city from banning a breed of dog. Instead, the council directed the police chief and city staff to draft a new animal ordinance which may include:
* Regulations restricting the number of animals allowed on a property
* Stronger penalties for people who fail to control their animals
* Better enforcement of the city's animal ordinance
