State law helps pet owners rest in peace

Between trips to Del Mar for her dog's physical therapy swim sessions
and weekly IV doses of her cat's kidney medicine, Ina Cowan worried.
Who would be there to ensure the 63-year-old Murrieta woman's beloved
collie, Mitzvah, and cat, Humphrey Bogart, remained "happy, healthy
and spoiled" if she died before them?
"I was, like, heartsick," Cowan said. "I didn't know what to do."
She found solace in a lawyer's office, where she set up a trust
leaving tens of thousands of dollars and specifications on exactly how
her pets should be cared for....
Currently, 39 states have enacted pet trust laws, according to
Michigan State University College of Law's Animal Legal and Historical
Center.
The new trend marks the first area of law that treats animals -- in
this case, domestic pets -- as "legal persons," said David Favre, law
professor editor of the Animal Legal and Historical Center....
