The city of Elkhart is still trying to figure out whether to ban pit bulls.
A special committee met again on Tuesday to discuss a proposed ordinance that would make it illegal to own a pit bull in Elkhart.
This was the committee's third meeting, and they have yet to get around to the part of the legislation that specifically addresses pit bulls. Instead, they've been discussing other parts of the ordinance.
We spoke with a committee member who breeds pit bulls. He says when the committee does start talking about the breed, he hopes to convince them it's not fair to single out pit bulls because they're not as dangerous as most people think.
"If you look at a lot of studies, a lot of animals that they say it was a pit bull that bit, when they went back and did more investigating it wasn't even a pit bull," said Austin Kemery. "It was a different type of breed of dog."
The committee will meet at least one more time before giving its recommendation to the City Council.
If the ordinance passes as written, pit bulls would be banned in Elkhart.
However, current pit bull owners would be grandfathered in provided they satisfy several requirements, including muzzling their dogs and getting $300,000 worth of insurance.
